Panel Description

In 2015, NWRI formed an Independent Advisory Panel on behalf of the West Basin Municipal Water District to provide expert peer review of the technical and scientific aspects of a Subsurface Intake Feasibility Guidance Manual. That review was completed in April 2015, and the Manual has subsequently been applied to assess the feasibility of subsurface seawater intakes for a proposed desalination plant at the NRG Facility in El Segundo. Additional testing and analyses were also conducted to assess the feasibility of the different available subsurface seawater intake technologies as part of a larger West Basin effort titled "Ocean Water Desalination Subsurface Intake Study." The Panel is reconvening to review the efforts by the project team and the conclusions that were made with respect to intake feasibility.

Panel Members

The Panel is made up of four experts in the fields of intake and well design, hydrogeology, evaluation of structures and vessels in the marine environment, implementation of projects at public agencies, and other areas relevant to the study.

Panel members include:

About the Study

West Basin is conducting the Ocean Water Desalination Subsurface Intake Feasibility Study to investigate full-scale subsurface intake technology. The purpose of the study, which is under contract to Geosyntec Consultants, is to develop a comprehensive, systematic procedure to evaluate the feasibility of subsurface intake technology at any given project site, and then apply this procedure and additional testing and analyses specifically to the NRG Facility site in El Segundo.

Panel Charge

The panel is charged with assessing the appropriateness of the conclusions made by the project team with respect to the feasibility of subsurface intakes at the NRG Facility in El Segundo, CA.
