Matthew Verbyla, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering at San Diego State University, where he teaches courses related to sanitation, wastewater treatment, and microbiological processes for environmental engineering. He also directs the Safe WaTER Research Group.

 

His research aims to better understand, characterize, and control the occurrence, persistence, and resistance of pathogens in engineered and natural systems to protect public health.

 

He has a BS in Civil Engineering from Lafayette College, and MS and PhD degrees in Environmental Engineering from University of South Florida. Verbyla completed a postdoctoral research assignment with the LCE virus group at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland.
