Jörg Drewes, PhD, is Chair Professor of Urban Water Systems Engineering at Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany, and Co-Chair of the German Advisory Council on Global Change. Previously, he was a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines and served as Director of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center on Reinventing the Nation’s Urban Water Infrastructure (ReNUWIt).
Drewes’ work focuses on energy-efficient advanced water and wastewater treatment, water reuse, and managing risk for public health protection. He is interested in the integrated management of local and regional water cycles and the development of new water treatment that combines natural and engineered approaches; water reuse; support for drinking water supplies; and comprehensive assessment approaches for organic trace substances and pathogens as well as antibiotic resistance to ensure safe water quality.
Drewes has published more than 380 peer-reviewed journal papers. HIs awards include the Willy-Hager Medal in 2025 for outstanding contribution to scientific research into the fundamentals and processes of water treatment, the Bavarian State Medal for outstanding services to the environment, the William Dunbar Medal of the European Water Association in 2022, the AWWA Rocky Mountain Section Outstanding Research Award, and the Quentin Mees Research Award. Drewes holds an MS and PhD in Environmental Engineering from Technical University of Berlin, Germany.
