Environmental engineer Mark R. Wiesner, Ph.D., P.E., of Duke University, was selected as the 2011 Clarke Prize recipient because of his groundbreaking efforts and leadership in improving water quality through advancements in membrane and nanotechnology research.

Mark received the award at the Eighteenth Annual NWRI Clarke Prize Lecture and Award Ceremony, held on Thursday, July 14, 2011, in Newport Beach, California. He was accompanied by his family.

Mark received congratulations from fellow Clarke Prize Laureates who attended the Eighteenth Annual NWRI Clarke Prize Lecture and Award Ceremony.

The award ceremony included framed "congratulations" letters from governors, university presidents, and other leaders, as well as a tribute to Dr. Charles O'Melia, the 2000 Clarke Laureate who passed away in 2010. O'Melia was Mark's former Ph.D. co-advisor.

As part of the ceremony, Jeff Mosher of NWRI (left) honored the Joan Irvine Smith & Athalie R. Clarke Foundation for 20 Years of Support and Encouragement. Jim Swinden (right), grandson of Athalie R. Clarke (for whom the Clarke Prize was named), accepted the honor.

Dr. Jerry Schnoor, the 2010 Clarke Prize recipient and Mark's former graduate advisor, provided an introduction of Mark and his accomplishments at the ceremony.

Mark described the benefits and potential risks of using nanotechnology to revolutionize water treatment processes in his Lecture, "Nanomaterials, Water, and the Directed Self-Assembly of Environmentally Responsible Industries."

Guests at the Clarke Prize Award Ceremony included Laureates and members of the water industry, such as academics, utility personnel and board members, consultants, and many others.
